Right-to-work checks during onboarding by country
Updated 5 November 2026
Before a new hire starts work, employers in every country are legally required to verify identity and confirm employment eligibility. Collecting these documents early avoids costly onboarding delays and fines.
Standard checklists by country
- United States: Form I-9 verification requires either one document from List A (US Passport, Permanent Resident Card) or a combination of List B (Driver's License) and List C (Social Security Card).
- United Kingdom: Digital identity checks and Home Office online right-to-work share codes for non-UK nationals, or British/Irish passports for citizen verification.
- UAE & GCC: Emirates ID front and back, passport bio-page, residency visa, and entry permit/labor contract issued by MOHRE.
- Singapore: Masked NRIC for citizens/permanent residents, or Ministry of Manpower (MOM) Employment Pass, S Pass, or Work Permit.
- India: PAN card, masked Aadhaar proof (with first 8 digits redacted per UIDAI compliance rules), and bank account validation.
Secure digital document collection
Never email unencrypted identity proofs. Using a secure candidate onboarding portal allows new hires to photograph or upload files directly, where HR can record manual verification and trigger retention rules automatically. OneATS does not call third-party identity verification APIs; verification is recorded manually by authorized HR administrators. Last reviewed: 5 November 2026.
