Under the hood
How online resume parsing works
From unstructured document to clean candidate profile in three automated steps.
1. Text extraction & OCR
Plain text is extracted from PDF and Word (.docx) files. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) processes scanned documents and image files.
2. Entity recognition
Heuristic patterns and skills dictionaries map the raw text into structured fields: contact information, education, employment timelines, and skill tags.
3. Display & instant deletion
Results are presented in a clean table for inspection and copying. The temporary file is permanently deleted from the server with zero database writes.
ATS optimization tips
Tips for a CV that parses accurately in an ATS
How to format your resume so applicant tracking systems extract your qualifications without errors.
- Use single-column layouts: Multi-column layouts and text boxes can cause text extraction algorithms to read across columns, scrambling work history dates and titles.
- Use standard section headings: Stick to universal headings such as "Experience", "Work History", "Education", and "Skills" rather than creative labels like "My Journey".
- Place contact details at the top: Ensure your full name, email, phone number, and location are in the document body, not hidden inside header or footer margins.
- Format dates consistently: Use standard formats like "MM/YYYY – MM/YYYY" or "Month YYYY – Present" so your total years of experience calculate correctly.
- Save as PDF or modern .docx: Export your resume as a standard PDF or modern Word file (.docx). Avoid legacy binary .doc files or screenshots of text.
- List skills explicitly: Include relevant tools, technologies, and certifications in a clear bulleted skills section so dictionary matching detects them immediately.

Frequently asked questions
Is this online resume parser really free?
Yes. You can parse up to 5 resumes per day without creating an account or entering credit card details.
Do you store or save my uploaded resume?
No. Your uploaded file is processed temporarily in memory to extract structured text fields, and is deleted immediately from our servers. Nothing is written to any database or used to create a candidate profile.
Which resume file formats are supported?
The tool supports PDF documents, Microsoft Word files (.docx), and common image formats including PNG, JPG, and WEBP. Legacy binary .doc files are not supported.
Why are some fields marked as 'Not found'?
Resumes with unconventional graphic layouts, multi-column text tables, or non-standard section headers may be harder for algorithmic parsers to read. See our formatting tips below for optimal resume structure.
How can our recruiting team parse resumes automatically in bulk?
OneATS includes automated resume parsing for recruitment teams. Every CV submitted on your careers page, forwarded from your HR email inbox, or uploaded in bulk is converted into a candidate profile with match scoring.
